THE LAST RESORT is a unique architectural wonder – a self-sustaining amalgam of over 25 highly original structures known for their beauty and functionality. For over 40 years, David Lee Hoffman has built and designed a series of handcrafted structures utilizing high quality recycled materials. His peaceful village-like compound reflects the natural world and is ‘built to last for centuries’. He has incorporated the use of stone, masonry, wood, bamboo, and earth in his construction that has been influenced by years of traveling the world. “It’s an important and significant example of east-west Folk Art” according to sustainable architect Sim Van der Ryn, who was appointed California State Architect by California Governor Jerry Brown, and is on the architecture faculty at the University of California Berkeley. Many consider this work to be a one of a kind quintessential ‘living history’ – a testimony to the do-it-yourself, back to the land, respect Mother Earth ethos of the 1960′s put into practice.
THE LAST RESORT(Le DERNIER RECOURS) est un ensemble architectural étonnant, un amalgame de plus de 25 stuctures originales reconnues pour leur beauté et pour leur fonctionnalité. Depuis plus de 40 ans, David Lee Hoffman a construit et dessiné une série de structures manuelles, utilisant une grande quantité de matériaux recyclés. Son territoire paisible, est le reflet d'un monde naturel et est bâti pour pouvoir durer pendant des siècles. ll a incorporé dans sa construction l'utilisation de la pierre, de la maçonnerie, du bois, du bambou et de la terre ainsi que des influences qui lui ont été apportées par des années de voyage à travers le monde.
C'est un important et signifiant exemple d'Art Folk Est-Ouest, en concordance avec les idées de l'architecte Sim Van der Rijn, qui est appointé comme architecte de l'Etat de Californie par le Gouverneur Jerry Brown, et qui est à la base de l'architecture de le l'Université de Berkley-Californie. Beaucoup de gens considèrent que ce travail est un témoignage essentiel du "Faites-le par vous-même", du retour à la terre et du respect de l'éthique de notre univers, entrés dans la pratique dès les années soixante

It attempts to assimilate both natural methods from the past with modern know-how to create a living system that effectively demonstrates possibilities of thriving in a non-polluting healthy environment. To this end, a unique INTEGRATED BIO-MANAGEMENT SYSTEM has been successfully developed. Visionary use of vermiculture, composting, and healthy grey water systems have produced a valuable fertilizer to create superior soil and grow high grade organic food. Many useful discoveries and insights have emerged along the way that indeed may prove very beneficial in our challenged changing world.

HOW IT WORKS: Comment cela fonctionne 
The Grey Water System - It all starts and ends in the kitchen. The journey begins at the kitchen sink. All wash/waste water, and small food scraps go down the drain and, by gravity, enter THE WORM PALACE —a continuous feeding system for vermicompostitng and bio-filtration of household organic waste and recycling. The “PALACE” itself is a small self- contained environment which contains a rich community of life (emphasis on earthworms Eisenia foetida and Lumbricus rubellus and a host of other micro- and macro- organisms) designed to bio-digest the solid food and filter the ‘waste’ water. What results is the creation of ‘nature’s finest fertilizer’– i.e. wormcasts, as well as healthy nutritious life-giving water. The water that comes out and goes into the upper moat is now chock full of life giving nutrients. This is evidenced by the richness of the flora growing directly out of the water in the moat, even without the presence of soil, as well as the myriad of critters that live and thrive in this environment (frogs, salamanders, snakes,water beetles, dragonflies, birds, etc).
Le système de l'eau grise.Tout commence et finit dans la cuisine.Le voyage commence à l'évier de la cuisine. Toutes les eaux d'évacuation, tous les déchets de nourriture, entrent dans LE PALAIS des VERS,(Lombrics et autres) qui se chargent de les transformer en compost. Les eaux qui vont dans un bassin supérieur sont filtrées et fertilisées, ce que prouve la richesse de la flore qui pousse directement au sein des bassins en question ainsi que de la faune qui y vit (serpents, grenouilles, salamandres, scarabées d'eau, libellules, oiseaux...). 
The water then leaves the upper moat through a micro- wetland into the lower moat system. At the opposite end of the lower moat is the Solar Power Shower Tower where the shower water filters through another bio-wetland filter and ultimately merges with the kitchen sink water. Finally it enters a large holding tank, after passing through, yet another bio-filter, where the water is stored until needed for garden use, fruit tree irrigation, and for the chickens. And the cycle is completed by harvesting the delicious nutritious food and eggs to be prepared in the kitchen! All this is accomplished without the use of electricity plus the physical environment celebrates beauty and a reverence for life giving life. And it’s a joy
L'eau quitte alors le bassin supérieur et à travers une terre bio humide, et accède à un bassin inférieur. Du côté opposé au bassin intérieur, se trouve la Tour de la Douche sous puissance solaire où l'eau de la douche est filtrée à travers une autre terre humide bio et remonte vers l'évier de la cuisine. Il y a en outre un grand réservoir d'eau filtrée qui se remplit et qui alimente le potager, les arbres fruitiers et les poules

Hoffman is known in the tea world for introducing and popularizing fine handcrafted artisanal teas to the West. He began importing pu’erh teas from Nepal in the early 1970s, and eventually ventured into remote regions in China to seek out the world’s finest rare organic and wild pure leaf teas.
Hoffman’s teas eventually gained wide popularity in the US, the Americas, and Europe. He became known in China as the “the American Pu-erh Tea King”, and is considered a leading authority on pu-erh’s. Hoffman has named several fine teas including Drum Mountain Clouds and Mist, Tongyu Mountain Green, and Camel’s Breath. He also was the first importer of flowering (“blossoming”) tea from China. He is the subject of filmmaker Les Blank and Gina Leibrecht’s 2007 documentary All In This Tea.
Hoffman est connu dans le monde du Thé pour avoir introduit et popularisé des thés artisanaux excellents, dans le monde occidental. Il a commencé par importer des thés pu'erh au départ du Nepal dans les années 70, pour s'aventurer ensuite dans des régions éloignées de Chine pour y chercher des feuilles de thé organiques, rares et sauvages. Les thés d'Hoffman ont gagné en popularité aux USA, en Amérique latine et en Europe. ll est devenu connu en Chine comme "Le thé royal américain Pu-erh, dont il est le leader. il est le héros du film du réalisateur LES BLANK et de Gina LEIBRECHT'S, ALL IN THIS TEA, de 2007

Hoffman sold his Silk Road Tea company in 2004 and now runs The Phoenix Collection.
Hoffman developed his interest in teas during his extensive world travels to over 100 countries. He was amongst the first Americans to visit the remote Tibetan kingdom of Dolpo. In the early 1960s, Hoffman befriended the Dalai Lama while living in Dharamshala, India. Several Tibetan monks have contributed to the construction and creation of Hoffman’s eastern-inspired sustainable research center THE LAST RESORT, in Lagunitas, California.
Prior to entering the tea world, Hoffman invented a unique sonic cleaning system for the cleaning of precious ancient textiles, fine art, and artifacts, and had several important clients including the New York’s Metropolitan Museum, the Textile Museum in Washington DC, the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, and the Smithsonian.
